SUNDRY AIRSOFT THINGS I'VE OWNED.

Well I said I'd do it and this is the reviews page for all those odds and ends I've had over the years, which weren't pistols or don't neatly fit into the other categories.

Most recent acquisitions at the top.

ERMA MP40 Spring Rifle - Double Eagle

I'd always liked the look of the Schmeisser machine pistol (more properly known as the ERMA MP40). I guess it's an age thing - Kids today love MP5s - but the only one I'd ever seen was the crazily expensive Asahi gun, so when I saw a reasonable looking facsimile on eBay, I couldn't resist.

The only other MP40 I know of costs 15 times the price, at least!

It arrived impressively fast, but in a rather short looking box. Opening it up explained all - The gun was in a number of pieces that required assembly. Fortunately, they were easy enough to slot together without the need for any tools and once assembled the finished item was, for the price, remarkably impressive.

Requires assembly, but it's simple, requiring no tools.

I've never handled a real MP40, but the size and shape of this cheap replica look and feel remarkably good. What it really lacks it weight, but if you're really bothered, it wouldn't take long to open it up and fill some of the available space with metal (or even sand) weights.

Front sight and barrel nicely replicated.

The pressed frame, distinctive magazine (which holds an accurate 32 BBs in a single stack and fills by pushing the spring down to bottom, dropping in BBs and pressing a catch to release the spring) and sights are well replicated.

Dimensions are accurately reproduced - For £40, this is a great looking gun.

The folding stock is latched into position (open or closed) by a press catch at the rear of the receiver, but wobbles a bit when extended. It does, however, look good and overall length (open and closed) is accurate to the real thing.

Pressed receiver and plastic grips nicely replicated. Note catch to release stock.

Accuracy is OK at short range, but (despite the gun's size) the barrel is short and there's no suggestion of hop-up, so accurate range is limited to around 50ft or so, with BBs flying another 20 or so. Obviously, being a springer, you need to cock the gun every shot.

Update : April 2006

I had another of these for a short while and chronoed it with .12g BBs.

The average over 10 shots was 230fps (equivalent to 177fps with .2g BBs, but you wouldn't want to use .2g BBs with it really)

Shot      FPS
1 196.3
2 229.0
3 230.4
4 218.9
5 249.6
6 232.2
7 237.1
8 237.5
9 235.0
10 235.8

Overall, this isn't a skirmish weapon, but for collectors or as a stage-prop/display piece, it's remarkably good for the price.

Heckler & Koch MP5K Mini - UHC

This has been my only experience of an Electric gun to date.

I bought this gun, basically, to get hold of the target net it came with and sold it on within a few days for a small profit.

Quality was ok, but the overall look and feel of the gun is, as you'd expect, caricaturish. I chose the MP5, because I felt it the most realistic looking.

Biggest problems for me were the fact it takes batteries and lots of them (They run out in no time) and the fact that to get it to fire you need to hold down the safety (which being on the left side - intended for the right hand thumb - is a really pain for left handers like myself).

Shooting it (when the batteries were fresh) was fun, but nothing like a GBB on full auto and neither range nor accuracy were worth mentioning.

More fun in the back garden or office than as a full-auto backup, although I often read of people who do use them on skirmishes.

Weight : Light.

Heckler & Koch MP5 Spring rifle - Hap Dong

I got this because, when I only had springers, I fancied something a little bigger.

Not EXACTLY this gun, but very similar

It cost me about £35 and was pretty good. Around a kilo in weight, it felt pretty substantial compared with the spring pistols I had and the pump action front stock made it easy to rattle off a quick succession of shots without lifting your eyes from the sights and it was pretty accurate.

On the downside, it ALWAYS felt as though the internals were fragile and it was quite easy to get a misfeed with the pump action (basically BBs didn't feed, rather than they jammed).

I got bored with a spring rifle pretty quickly, realising I was really a handgun man.

Remington Riot Gun - Unknown

This was the second BB gun I bought and as you'll notice there's no photo - I never bothered and it doesn't seem that anyone else on the web has, either!

Update (May 2005!) - Wrong!!! Just found one for sale on eBid, so here's the picture - Cool, eh?

I'd had my UHC M9 and was very impressed, so the Pump action shotgun with a long magazine looked like real fun.

It was crazily cheap (about £6 as I recall), but I didn't spot that there HAD to be a catch.

The catch was that this is around 6 inches long!!!! It was a tiny toy rather than a full sized BB replica (something I'm now very wary of) and, although it could fire BBs, it came with tiny plastic baton rounds.

It was rubbish really, although it didn't break whilst I had it, but then again it became my first ever eBay sale within a week...

I've since spotted them for sale in cheap shops for £2.99, which is still more than they are worth!

Weight : unknown - VERY little.
